Texel medicinal sheepskin: ideal for prolonged sitting or lying down

This medicinally tanned sheepskin effectively helps to reduce bedsores (decubitus), back pain, joint pain, and muscle pain.

The medical sheepskin distributes pressure evenly across the body, providing extra comfort and relief.

The Texel medicinal sheepskin XL is a healthcare product that is widely used as part of medical aids and can even have an AGB declaration code for healthcare use.

What is pressure ulcer (bedsore)?

Pressure ulcer, or bedsore, occurs when the skin and underlying tissue are under prolonged pressure.

People who have to lie in bed a lot or are unable to move much are particularly at risk. German research and studies in Australia show that the use of a medicinal sheepskin can significantly reduce the risk of wounds.

In Australia, no less than 91% of patients did not develop bedsores when using a medicinal sheepskin.

Texel sheepskins from the Texelaar breed

Our medicinal skins come from the Texel breed of sheep.

Due to the salty sea air and wind on Texel, the wool of these sheepskins has a sturdy structure, strong properties, and a high lanolin content.

Most of the lanolin is retained during the tanning process, preserving the softness, natural shine, and antibacterial properties.

This makes Texel medicinal sheepskin extremely suitable for healthcare applications and for people with sensitive skin.

What is medicinal sheepskin?

Medicinal sheepskin, also known as medical sheepskin, is a specially tanned product.

This sheepskin is sheared short and tanned in a special way, giving it a pleasant firmness while remaining soft to the skin.

The special tanning process ensures that the skin remains washable and free of harmful substances.

This makes these skins safe for daily use in care and healthcare institutions.

Regular sheepskin is mainly intended as a decorative product, while medicinal sheepskin is really intended as a care aid.

The advantages of Texel medicinal sheepskin

Our Texel medicinal sheepskins offer numerous advantages:

  • Pressure-reducing – helps prevent pressure sores
  • Moisture and temperature regulating – adapts to body temperature
  • Antibacterial effect – helps reduce bacteria and dirt
  • Washable (in moderation) with a wool detergent at 30°C
  • Irritation-free and soft on the skin
  • Ideally suited for people who sit or lie down for long periods of time

This makes the fleece feel cozy and warm in winter and wonderfully cool in summer.

Natural wool breathes, regulates moisture, and maintains a constant temperature.

Maintenance and care

To keep your medicinal sheepskin in top condition:

  • Air regularly in the open air (not in direct sunlight or near heating)
  • Beat with a carpet beater to remove dust and dirt
  • Only wash when strictly necessary, preferably by hand or on a wool wash cycle at 30°C
  • Use a wool detergent and do not tumble dry
  • Any stains can be removed with a damp cloth

This will keep the fleece beautiful and hygienic and preserve its softness and lanolin.

    FAQs

What is a medicinal sheepskin and what is it used for?

A medicinal sheepskin is short-shorn, washable and specially tanned. This tanning process often gives it a slightly yellower colour than a regular sheepskin. Medicinal sheepskins are used in healthcare or at home for extra comfort when sitting or lying down for long periods of time. They are ideal for use in bed, on a chair or in a wheelchair. The skin ensures good pressure distribution, helps prevent bedsores and can provide relief for joint problems.

Can I wash a medicinal sheepskin?
es, a medicinal sheepskin is washable (in moderation). Do not wash it too often, as this will preserve the lanolin.
Wash a medicinal sheepskin on a special wool wash programme with a wool detergent. Do this at a maximum temperature of 30 degrees. Then allow the sheepskin to dry slowly (e.g. in the bathroom) and gently stretch the skin while drying. This will make it supple again.
Is my medicinal sheepskin covered by my health insurance?
All our medicinal skins have an AGB code with which you can request a claim. It is best to check with your health insurance provider whether the skin will be reimbursed. The reimbursement depends on your insurance and the nature of the complaints.

    ✓ AGB claim code: 76091238
    ✓ Qualification code: 7600
    ✓ G-Standard / Z-index code: 17102847
