This wooden darning mushroom makes darning socks super easy
Wool is a fantastic product, especially to wear as clothing. It has super many benefits for your skin and body, but unfortunately it is also prone to wear and tear. So if you are an avid woollen sock wearer, you might end up with a hole in your sock. This is an unfortunate part of life, but fortunately it is easy to fix by darning your socks.
By darning your socks, they can be used again for another round and you are also doing something sustainable. An easy tool for this is the Skéépe darning mushroom. By pulling your sock over this wooden mushroom, you keep the wool taut and make it easier to darn your sock neatly.
What is darning socks?
Darning socks is not simply sewing a hole back together. What you actually do is weave a small piece of yarn between the hole. It's best to use woollen yarn for this too. By weaving the hole closed and thus tucking your sock, you fill the hole nicely and it is made neat and sturdy again.
How should you darn socks?
- To start with, stretch the sock over the tucking mushroom so that the hole is clearly visible. Using the elastic provided, you then secure the sock so that it stays nicely stretched over the hat of the mushroom.
- Next, at one corner of the hole, fix your yarn and sew a thread from left to right. You repeat this until you have covered the entire hole with horizontal threads.
- Next, you start sewing your thread vertically. You weave these threads through the horizontal threads until the hole is completely gone. That's it! Your sock has stopped.
