Care and maintenance of your sheepskin

Maintenance of Texel sheepskin

A sheepskin naturally has a self-cleaning effect. However, it is natural that your fur may become dirty or dull during use. We are therefore happy to provide advice on how to keep your sheepskin beautiful and clean.

Can I wash my sheepskin?

It is best not to wash a sheepskin. Washing removes the naturally present lanolin (wool fat) and the skin of the fleece becomes hard and stiff as it dries.

Still want to wash your sheepskin?

Steam cleaning sheepskin:

It is best to have your sheepskin steam cleaned with a special wool cleaning agent.

Hand washing sheepskin:

If you wash your sheepskin by hand, it is best to do this in cold water and with a special wool detergent.

Washing sheepskin in the washing machine:

If you do decide to wash your fur in the washing machine, it is best to do this on a wool wash program with a special wool detergent. If you do not have a wool program, wash it on a short program of maximum 30 degrees.

Drying sheepskin:

If your fur is wet, it is best to shake it out and gently squeeze it dry. It is important to let your fur dry as slowly as possible, so not in the sun or dryer. Hang your fur to dry in the bathroom and stretch the leather part regularly during drying. Keep in mind that drying can take a long time.

How do I keep my sheepskin clean?

Stains:

Stains are best cleaned with a damp cloth. It is best not to get the leather wet.

Air:

Furthermore, it is best to air your fur outside for a while and preferably during high humidity such as fog but not rain. It can also work wonders to put your fur in the snow.

Brushing:

There are special brushes and wool combs available to maintain your coat. This will give the coat a beautiful structure again. By combing or brushing a felted coat, it will get a beautiful and soft look again.

Vacuuming:

Just like a rug, you can vacuum your Texel sheepskin every now and then. This removes the dirt between the hairs.

My sheepskin has a strong odor

Due to the tanning process, which is mainly done with natural products, a fur can smell a bit strong at first. Especially the medicinal furs. This smell is experienced as unpleasant by some people. In this case, it is best to just start using the fur. The fur will then eventually take on the smell of the environment. In addition, you can also air a fur outside occasionally. Preferably air a fur in high humidity such as fog, but certainly not in the rain.

The smell always diminishes after a few weeks!

What does wool fat / Lanolin do?

The lanolin that is naturally present in a sheepskin is more of a wax than a fat. This wax has a dirt-repellent and antibacterial function. Because of this beautiful natural product, your fur actually keeps itself clean! The wool fat also has a healing effect on your skin and is often used in creams and ointments.

What is the difference between a medicinal sheepskin and a regular sheepskin?

Medicinal coats:

Medicinal sheepskins or health skins , are tanned in a special way, are shorn shorter and more yellow in color. They are intended to be used for medical purposes such as bedsores, joint pain and skin problems. A sheepskin also contains microbes that offer protection against lung diseases and asthma in babies and children .
The special ecological tanning process also makes the fur easier to clean. The fur can be washed, but do this as little as possible.
